Silvestre Abreu marks Diabetes Day with a lecture at “Liceu”

November 14, 2024 às 10:00 - 11:00

On November 14th, at 10 a.m., as part of World Diabetes Day, an informational and Q&A session on the topic of diabetes will be held in the Conference Room of Jaime Moniz Secondary School, with endocrinologist Dr. Silvestre Abreu as the speaker.

The School Health Team organizes the event, which is aimed at all classes, in particular, classes with pre-diabetic and diabetic students, as the theme of World Diabetes Day 2024-26 is Diabetes and Wellbeing .

World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14th and was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The date was chosen in honor of the birthday of Frederick Banting, one of the discoverers of insulin, who revolutionized the treatment of diabetes.

The main objective of this day is to increase the school community's awareness of diabetes and its consequences, as well as promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyles. The theme for the period 2024-2026 is Diabetes and Wellbeing, with an emphasis on prevention and early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, highlighting the importance of knowing the risk and the actions to be taken.

Diabetes is a disease that affects around 366 million people worldwide, with a significant prevalence in countries such as Portugal, where more than 1 million people are diagnosed. World Diabetes Day campaigns include various activities, such as educational programs, sporting events and lighting of monuments in blue, symbolizing unity in the fight against this disease.
