2nd SEA FESTIVAL AT THE LICEU

As part of the Week of Clubs, Groups and Projects, Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz, with the orientation of the “Escola Azul” Project, will promote, between April 9th and 19th, 2024, the “II Festival of the Sea”, with a vast program of activities.
It should be noted that the “Liceu” is one of the 56 schools in RAM that joined the “Escola Azul” Educational Program, promoted by the Regional Directorate of the Sea, supervised by the Regional Secretariat of Sea and Fisheries, with Sandra Brito as Regional coordinator. “A Blue School actively involves the school community in understanding the ocean’s influence on us and our influence on the ocean” (escolaazul.pt).
The opening ceremony of the Festival do Mar is scheduled for April 9th, with the background theme “The Sea begins in You”, at Largo do Museu da ES Jaime Moniz, with an exhibition alluding to the event to remain open to the public until April 30th. The event's godfather is the sailor and former Olympic athlete, João Rodrigues.
Barreirinha beach will have a special intervention, as it was sponsored by ES Jaime Moniz, on May 11, 2023, as part of the “Escola Azul” educational program. Therefore, a commitment was made to protect this bathing space and promote its promotion. As such, in the first week of the II Festival do Mar, from April 9th to 12th, the “Splash na Barreirinha” will be held, with the participation of “Liceu” students. These activities will be led by lifeguards from Frente MarFunchal.
The Week ends on April 12th with a Sunset Matiné, at the Barreirinha Bathing Complex, aimed at the entire Educational community, and other guests. On this day, there will be a fashion show (Project RS4E – 11º21), with the support of designers André Pereira, Rita Pessanha and Valentina Santos. During the event, a mocktail will be served, with the support of the Madeira School of Hotel and Tourism and, finally, music with DJ DÉA.
From the 15th to the 19th of April, several activities will be carried out at sea, namely water sports, aimed at ESJM students – Canoeing and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) – with the technical support of Clube Centro Treino Mar.
On April 16th, in addition to the planned activities, two conferences will be held, with emphasis on the Lecture “Sea – The Parallel World”, with João Rodrigues as speaker. The event will take place in the Dr. Jorge Moreira de Sousa Conference Room.
The closing ceremony of the II Sea Festival is scheduled for April 18th, in the atrium of the school's main entrance, where, for the first time at ESJM, the raising of the Blue Flag will take place, a distinction given as a symbol of recognition of good practices sustainability and promotion of environmental education, within the scope of maritime literacy.
For Maria José Barreto, coordinator of the “Escola Azul” Project at ES Jaime Moniz, this educational program plays a fundamental role in the development of Ocean Literacy.
The Blue School is an educational program of the Ministry of Economy and Sea whose mission is to “promote Ocean Literacy in the school community and create more responsible and participatory generations, who contribute to the sustainability of the Ocean”.
The aim of this Festival, also highlights the Physical Education teacher, Ana Afonso, is to encourage the educational community to take more responsible attitudes towards the ocean.
