Conference: “Diabetes: Educate to Prevent”
November 14, 2023 às 15:00 - 16:00

On November 14, 2023, a conference entitled “Diabetes: Educate to Prevent” will take place in the Dr. Jorge Moreira de Sousa Conference Room, in Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz, at 3 pm. On World Diabetes Day, in memory of the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, together with Charles Best, was responsible for the discovery of insulin in 1922, Doctor Maria Leonor Ramos, will be the speaker.
This initiative, organized by the ESJM Health Team, aims to raise awareness among students and the community about the disease and disseminate tools for prevention, as this pathology is experiencing alarming growth around the world.
Facts and figures, according to Internacional Diabetes Federation – IDF, sigla em inglês (https://idf.org/about-diabetes/diabetes-facts-figures/): Diabetes facts and figures show the growing global burden on individuals, families and countries. The IDF Diabetes Atlas (2021) reports that 10.5% of the adult population (20-79 years) has diabetes and almost half are unaware that they live with the disease.
By 2045, IDF projections show that 1 in 8 adults, approximately 783 million, will live with diabetes, an increase of 46%.
More than 90% of people with diabetes have type 2, which is driven by socioeconomic, demographic, environmental and genetic factors. The main contributors to the rise in type 2 diabetes are urbanization, the aging of the population, decreasing levels of physical activity, and the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity.
However, it is possible to reduce the impact of diabetes by taking preventative measures for type 2 and providing early diagnosis and appropriate care for all types of diabetes.
