Students visited the Madeira Water and Waste Telemanagement Center
The students of the Vocational Course Técnico de Gestão de Ambiente, from Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz, carried out a technical visit to the Telemanagement Center, of the company Águas e Residuos da Madeira (ARM), as part of National Water Day, celebrated this Tuesday, October 1st.
As explained by ARM, the initiative aimed to provide the students of the course with a different class about the water management and supply system of Madeira and Porto Santo. 'It is a complex system, equipped with a set of subsystems and infrastructures for water collection, production, treatment, transport, high-level distribution, and hydroelectric use, spread across several municipalities, and managed daily by around 400 employees working in ARM's water sector,' explained the public company.
ARM's Telemanagement system, implemented more than 20 years ago, allows for the remote management of all facilities, infrastructures, and equipment associated with the multi-municipal water supply system to the 9 municipalities of the Region, namely, Calheta, Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Machico, Ponta do Sol, Porto Santo, Ribeira Brava, Santa Cruz, and Santana.
ARM's Telemanagement Center, where the entire system is managed, is located at the Eng.º Manuel Rafael Amaro da Costa Water Treatment Plant (ETA da Alegria) in São Roque, in the municipality of Funchal. It allows for the optimization of water supply to the distribution networks in a rational way, with a focus on saving electricity and improving water efficiency.
National Water Day, celebrated annually on October 1st, determines the beginning of a new hydrological year, and “is an important date to reflect on the importance of increasingly efficient management of water resources”.
