Exhibition “Democratization in Portugal: from April 1974 to 1976”

On April 24th, the exhibition entitled Democratization in Portugal: from April 1974 to 1976 was opened at ESJM, which was attended by Diretor Regional da Juventude, André Alves.
This exhibition, aimed at the entire school community, is on display in the main building (Library and 3rd floor). The initiative came from the History disciplinary group and is part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution.
According to the teacher in charge of the History Group, Isabel Queirós, the 25th of April was a landmark moment for the Portuguese democracy. It symbolizes the beginning of a path of profound political, economic, social and cultural transformations. The military coup led by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) put an end to the authoritarian regime of the Estado Novo, paving the way for democratization, resolution of the problem of the colonial war and the development of the country, with the implementation of the 3D program: democratize, decolonize and develop.
The beginning of the democratization process proved to be troubled and the post-revolutionary period was marked by a climate of tension and political instability, which resulted in the existence of six provisional governments, between May 1974 and July 1976.
The exhibition's time frame characterizes the period from the April 25th Coup to the elections for the various sovereign bodies, held in 1976, after the approval of the Constitution of the Republic, in April of the same year. The democratization process was consolidated, transforming Portugal into a democratic and multi-party state, guaranteeing the fundamental rights and freedoms of its citizens.
