Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude launches campaign “You can also be the president of your club”

Despite the gradual increase in women's participation in sport, they continue to be underrepresented in the decision-making bodies of sporting institutions, including Sports Clubs.

The Government committed, together with the European Union and the Council of Europe, to implement measures for greater gender equality in sport. In July 2023, the first working group in this area was created, coordinated by paralympic athlete Leila Marques and with the participation of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality, Olympic Committee, Paralympic Committee, Confederation of Sports and Portuguese Football Federation.

The IPDJ, I.P. has been, following the All IN project, implementing its commitment to increase policies and programs to reduce barriers and increase the participation of girls and women in all areas of sport where leadership is included.

The All IN Project – Towards gender equality in sport, started in 2019, was the first major step towards making visible, at a European level, the existing inequalities between women and men, and committing the Countries involved in the project, as was the case from Portugal.

Pursuing the objectives of gender equality in sport and following the measures recommended in the Report resulting from the Working Group for Gender Equality in Sport, this national campaign was developed (in partnership with the Directorate-General for Education, the Directorate-General for School Establishments, the Regional Directorate of Sports of the Azores and the Regional Directorate of Sports of Madeira) aimed at girls, secondary school students, with a view to promoting and valuing leadership and sporting leadership in females, under the motto «You can too Be the president of your club. Enter the field».
