Participation in the “Eurodeputad@s por um dia” competition

Sixteen students from Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz participated, on November 14th, in the “Eurodeputad@s por um dia” competition, which took place at the Madeira Congress Center, in Funchal.

The initiative had 170 participants, 33 teams, and involved all Secondary Schools in Madeira.

It was a competition that simulates a plenary session of the European Parliament, and its theme was ‘Environment and climate change’.

The event was promoted by the member of the European Parliament, Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar, together with Europe Direct Madeira, and with the collaboration of Secretaria Regional da Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia.

The coordinators of the European Club at Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz formed 4 teams with students from the 10th, 11th and 12th years. Each team had to identify a real environmental and/or climate problem that affects European citizens. After identifying the problem, the students presented measures to mitigate it and solve the indicated problem. The presentation was made exclusively by the team's spokesperson, in front of the audience and the jury, and could not exceed two minutes. The team that addressed the topic of drought and fires came in fifth place in the competition.

This initiative's main objective was to encourage more active and conscious participation by our young people in the European construction process. It was a very enriching morning for our students.
